Posed by Jose Maria:
Is there anybody knows how to repair a file of powercadd, any time that I try to open it, PowerCADD crashes, I don't see the way of reparing the file to save the information.
Bo to the rescue:
Many things can happen for which there is no solution but a backup file, but there is one tip from Eng. Software 10 years ago which can still help if a corrupted object is causing a problem.
When the file window for the file in question is just loading as the PowerCADD window border draws, hit the Command-Period keys to stop any drawing of the screen with objects in the file.
With some corrupted objects, PowerCADD doesn't react adversly until the objects are displayed on screen, so this allows the file to load.
If you can get the file to open this way, then Hide All, and do a Save As.
Quit the original file and then try to open the Save As. If it bombs on drawing the screen, reopen with the Command-Period, Hide All, then click only one layer ON, and if it redraws OK, you can either remember the good layer or delete all other layers and do a Save As for that one layer, and so on until you find the bad layer.
If the bad layer has so much info you need to recover as much as possible, you can try to use Cleanup Drawing command and see if that works.
If not, you can Open, use Command-Period, then zoom to a small area in the upper left corner and let it redraw. Zoom Out may let you see & pick some objects before you get to an area where you have a bad object and can work around the area and recover as much as possible.
In the future, you might consider doing Save As (use a command key you like, for easiest access) and then during the day you name the files something like:
Drawing
Drawing1
Drawing2
etcThat means you don't lose anything farther back than your last Save As.
...and Bill Stanley adds:
Bo:
Your instructions are excellent and remembered with surprising accuracy.
In addition one can step up or down the objects on the current layer with the bracket keys. When the edit window is open the stats of the object are displayed. Bogus numbers far off page are always suspect. When an obvious bogus object is reached sometimes a crash will occur even though the object is not on the screen. The object is also selected which means that it can be deleted if desired.
Once we had a file that crashed on the 255th object on a layer. There were a huge number of layers. Using the techniques that you described and stepping through the objects many times (50 or more) the object was identified and deleted with an immediate save.
Tenacity is required to save a file with problems. Most will be surprised at the number of green and growey things that live off page similar to the refrigerator.
Thanks.
... this turned out to be
a very interesting thread indeed...
