Repairing Corrupted Files

Have you ever had problems opening PowerCADD files sent over the internet, or suddenly found your files can't be seen or opened by PowerCADD?

Jason Locher gives us a tutorial on how to fix offending file attributes using File Buddy.

Thanks Jason!

File Buddy v.8 is Shareware $39.95. You can download it from http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy/

(we also have a PDF of this tutorial if you would like a copy of your own: corrupted_files.pdf 328 kB)

Tutorial on using File Buddy to repair corrupted files.
January 25, 2005

  1. Install file buddy by placing the filebuddy.sit file into a permanent folder on the hard drive, double clicking on it, which will place and extract the File Buddy program. It should look like this:

  2. Double click on the File Buddy icon to launch the program.

  3. You should be able to see the filebuddy icon in the dock, now that the program is running. Hold down the Control Key and click on the filebuddy icon in the dock, and select "Keep in Dock" from the popup list. This will allow for easy access in the future.

  4. With file buddy open, click on the Special Tab in the top header bar, and select Registration from the list. Follow the instructions

  5. Time to repair files. Find the corrupted file in the Finder. You cannot do this directly from a mail program, it has to be done in the Finder. In this example I'm using a floor plan that I received via webmail that was corrupted. Hold down Control and click on the corrupted file, and select File Buddy from the list, and then Get Info from the expanded submenu.

  6. This will open the FileBuddy info window. It should look like this:

  7. Keeping the above FileBuddy window open, do the exact same thing to a "good" powercadd file. (Control, FileBuddy,Get Info). You now have 2 filebuddy windows open. In the good one, copy the File Type and paste it into the Bad file's File Type in its FileBuddy window. Do the same with the Creator. Save.

  8. You can now close the FileBuddy windows, you should notice that the icon on the corrupted file has now changed to the Powercadd Icon, and you can now open the file.

Fixing Multiple Files

You can also fix multiple corrupted files with one shot. The process is the same as before, except you select all the corrupted files in the finder, the control click, filebuddy, get info. Change the File Type and Creator, and then click on Change All instead of save, and you just fixed multiple files.

A note from Jason.

This tutorial was written assuming that you are using a one button mouse. If you are using a multi-button mouse, you can simply right click on the files instead of control+clicking. If you have any comments or suggestions, I'd be more than happy to hear from you. You can email me here.
